Birds – Feather Studies

January 3, 2011

Some sketches from tonight to practice bird anatomy. The information in the colored feather study is largely copied from this extremely useful tutorial by Cedarseed on deviantArt. Click the sketches to enlarge them.

You weren’t kidding about the tutorial being crazy useful and in depth. Damn. I may have to follow it myself. Glad to see you drawing birds, as they’re one of my favorite things to draw. I think its how the feathers create a pattern of nice brush strokes for inking. Also, what’s cuter than a confused little chickadee, really?

Cedarseed has a lot of great tutorials! He/she also has some small, self-published books that are apparently more extensive and in-depth than the tuts online, so it’s tempting to pick up some of them…

Yeah, birds are some of those animals – like rodents – that I’ve always had trouble with because their anatomy is largely masked by their feathers. I’m glad these get your seal of approval; I love how you draw birds!

Very nice work. I love the distinction of coloured flight feathers and secondary feather. Nice draftsmanship!
